5Superb - Like most highend devices, it needs TLC
By David DeCurtis
First of all, this machine is physically superior to all other super-automatic brands I checked out. The top line Jura, Saeco, and Krups are all wrapped in plastic with steel accents in front while the Delonghi is fully encased in steel. The engineering is very solid and it has a gorgeous presence in the kitchen. If you like Cappuccino, you will love this machine and its truly one touch operation. However, you must use proper sized Cappuccino cups to get the full experience. The machine is tuned to froth the milk and add the espresso shot so that froth extends about 1/4 inch above the edge of the cup. You can change these settings, but out-of-the-box it is perfect. I have never had a better Cappuccino anywhere - even Italy. (I use Illy medium roast beans). The milk container is incredibly convenient. I have placed the machine near my fridge so I simply store the milk container in the fridge after each use. It snaps in and out of place very easily. The espresso shots are wonderful. It is important that you take note of the grind setting when you open the box before you change it. They set the grind setting at the factory for each machine and it is unlikely that you will find a better mark. People say that super-automatics can't make a shot as good as the manual machines but think this machine defies that rule.To really enjoy and understand this machine, you need to read the manual and take some simple extra steps before and after you use it each day. First of all, use the rinse feature often. It takes 1/2 second to push the button. If the machine has been sitting for a while, hit rinse before you use it so the infuser will heat up. After your last cup for the morning etc, hit rinse. It is a quick and simple way to keep the machine working well. Second, before and after you use the milk container, hold the CLEAN button for 5 seconds. It blasts steam through the internal parts that transport the milk. There is no other way to clean the milk that enters the machine. If you don't do this, the milk will harden in the machine and cause problems. You do not need to CLEAN after every cup, just when you are finished for that period of the day. Again, it is quick and simple and makes a big difference. Finally, prep your machine based on your usage. Don't let the machine tell you to empty the container, fill the beans, or fill the water. Get ahead of it so that your coffee making sessions are not interrupted by these messages. Once every day or so, depending on usage, just check everything before you start so you don't waste time or coffee. Here is an important point. If you are drinking alone, this super- automatic is as much work or more than a manual machine. You need to prep and clean it more than a manual machine. The super-automatic only pays off in terms of convenience when you make the second cup and beyond. With this machine, you can just hit CAPPUCCINO 10 times in a row and you will have 10 cups - it's that simple. But after 14 cups you refil the water, empty the grounds container, top off the beans, clean the milk and rinse the infuser. To me, its all worth it because it makes a great cup of coffee and it is just so damn cool.In summary, I am so pleased with this product that I was motivated to write this review. What else can I say?

5The Gran Dama Lasts Longa...
By Omega
I had a Jura Capresso F9 for a year before it went bad - the company replaced it with a refurbished machine. I had upgraded to the Jura from a Saeco which was an absolute nightmare.Ultimately I enjoyed my Jura but hated that none of the parts were user-serviceable and I had to rely onthe cleaning tablets to ensure that the machine was 'clean'.After seeing the Delonghi in a William-Sonoma store demo I thought it was great - fully integrated single-touch operation and it was SOOOO much quieter than my Jura. I decided to upgrade.Setup was easy and all the pre-programmed touch buttons seemed to fill to the right quantities. I was nervous after seeing a couple reviews on here complaining about the milk container, but I've not had a problem since and I use the machine 3-4 times daily without any issue. There was another reviewer on here who made a statement I couldn't agree with more: you DO NOT purchase a fully automatic espresso machine with the idea that it eliminates cleaning or maintenance - that includes cleaning/cycling after each cup. However, this machine makes that process much easier. The construction and parts are all solid-steel. It shocked me that my $2000 Jura had silver plastic in the front with the audacity to call it 'chrome'. Yeah, I'll call that chrome when pigs call themselves fat-free.Anyhow, I'm quite pleased with this and would certainly recommend the product for those looking to replace or upgrade their current systems. When I have guests the machine has NO problem brewing lattes, regular cups of coffees or straight espressos - I also love that I can change the strength and taste for each individual cup; this is really ideal for multi-person use or guests and something that many other machines can't do. Or at least without completely changing the taste programming; the DeLonghi has a simple one touch button to change this between multiple taste/strength preferences. My only 'con' is I wish I could turn off the pre-brew function - I don't see this as an option in the programming screen.Overall pluses: - Big water tank - inter-changeable accessories - overall construction - cleaning system/self-cleaning - taste/strength change (on-the-fly) - many more...Cons: - Instructional DVD didn't work - Pre-brew function cannot be modified - No in-line water filter - cleaning container by count only - doesn't recognize if you've emptied or cleaned it out sooner

1Design Flaw
By Craig
I had to return two of these machines - on the first, the milk pitcher was almost impossible to install on the machine - it worked a few times, then started sticking terribly. Then it stopped recognizing that the pitcher was installed at all, thereby making a latte impossible. On the second machine it only worked once. I spoke with DeLonghi and they acknowledge that they had heard about this problem from other people. As with the earlier DeLonghi models, the milk doesn't get hot enough. With this added quirk, I'd avoid this machine until they get it straightened out.

1Do Not Buy This Machine
By Kuhllax24
My girlfriend decided to splurge on this product (and to try to save on her $5/day espresso habit). It's as beautiful as advertised, and simple to set up. Espressos and Lungos are mighty tasty.Unfortunately the entire Latissima series is suffering from a flaw with the milk-foam system. The first day or two foam comes out, but not nearly as much or as nice as in the Nespresso store. Then after the third day the milk quantity goes down significantly and the spout begins to just sputter out milk.My girlfriend and I went back to the Nespresso store twice to inquire what we were doing wrong; the store people unfortunately couldn't help us out. We also called the Nespresso-Club hotline, who was willing to send us a new machine. It turns out that there are a lot of users out there experiencing the same flaw. Go to Youtube and type in Nespresso Latissima; many users have posted videos evidencing the same exact problem as what we were having with our machine. This problem has been there since the introduction of the machine in 2007.We have decided to return the machine and purchase a lower-priced, but at least reliable machine. It is shameless on the part of Nespresso (and DeLonghi) to continue marketing this machine although there is a design flaw with the milk-housing unit. It also does not surprise me that the price has gone down almost 25%; Nespresso's trying to liquidate its inventory before more problems arise and it's sitting on this junk. Be forewarned, Nespresso's return policy is only 14 days from the date of purchase; I would therefore recommend purchasing from Bloomingdale's or Williams Sonoma, whose return policies are much more favorable to the consumer.

5Fantastic Machine - Great Coffee!
By Sozo
Since my last comment a year ago I have moved to the US and due to voltage have been forced to buy a new machine. Purchased exactly the same one and continue to be just as satisfied as with the first one. Paid the price - but having said that I see that costs are falling here. The new machine operates as consistently and well as the first. Recommendation therefore remains the same!We bought this machine a month and a half ago with great anticipation since we experienced Nespresso several times before. Since we are fans of cappuccinos, Lattes and Macchiato's this machine seemed to answer our needs. It did and in spades. Everything the machine is expected to do it does. I read other reviews but have not experienced any of the issues mentioned. The milk froth is fine, even adjustable. I prime/clean the spout after every session to make sure all is clear. Since you can adjust the quantities I was able to play around (drinking much coffee, strong and weak) before finding my 'eureka!'. It's simply the most easy coffee machine to use, with fantastic results. As for temperature of the coffee - I also felt sometimes the coffee wasn't warm enough but after running my cappuccino mug under hot water before making the coffee for a moment this was no longer an issue. We've had friends with typical home version espresso machines that just sit there until there is a special occasion because it's just too much trouble - this machine has easily become an everyday machine for us since we got it, which is what I think Nespresso/Delonghi intended.PROS: great coffee, many choices (even the short intense blends work in cappuccinos or long (luongo) coffees, space for taller glasses/cups for milk coffees, EASE OF USE!CONS: price (pretty steep in the US - I bought mine in Switzerland for US$500) but for the ease of use it's worth it, the space for taller cups is relatively narrow so you need to find ones that will fit (your usual huge Starbucks mug won't cut it here).

4Easy & Delicious
By Fletch
I went through about 5 different machines, including much more expensive ones, before settling on the Nespresso / DeLonghi EN660. I got it in red because at the time the red one was $100 cheaper than the black one. The black and red models are identical. The stainless steel version is $100 more, and has a stronger heating element in the top, so if you store cups on the top they will be much warmer than with the red or black version. Other than that, there is no functional difference between the stainless steel version and the black/red version.I have had this machines for about 6 months now, and I absolutely love it. The coffee is delicious, and there's virtually no cleanup. I can quickly make complicated drinks. I especially love the fact that it automatically dispenses the milk when making milk-based coffee drinks.I have found over time that this machine is very reliable, but there a few tricks/tips to make sure the milk froths properly: 1. The machine says it's ready to make milk froth too quickly. Frequently, if I make a latte as soon as the machine stops blinking and is ready to go, the milk isn't frothed enough. If I wait another 10 minutes or so, the machine is hot enough and the milk froths more fully. 2.If milk isn't frothing enough, the parts in the milk container may need a good washing. I find that I need to put the milk container and parts in the dish washer once a week. If frothing starts going down hill, it's time for a visit to the dishwasherI would definitely buy this machine again. The Nespresso coffee tastes great, and it's super easy to use. Cleanup is just a matter of pressing the steam button for 10 seconds, and wiping the nozzle and steam wand with a damp paper towel.

5Excellent so far.
By Gr8WhiteNortherner
Definitely worth 5 stars overall in my estimation - having done lots of research and knowing its limitations before the purchase. Quality of the espresso produced surpasses almost all coffee shops including Charbucks and others by far. An expert barrista may be able to produce slightly better quality, but even their results are not consistent.I previously returned a Jura-Capresso 13423 Impressa S9 One Touch Automatic Coffee-and-Espresso Center, Platinum because it produced inferior espresso and frothed milk with gigantic lukewarm bubbles. I would not have returned it (even at that price) if it had performed as well as the Talea. (THANK YOU AMAZON for a great return policy.) In fairness to the Jura, maybe it was faulty - at the finest setting the grounds looked very coarse - coarser than I would use for French-Press coffee. The Talea cost 1/3 the price, produces far superior espresso, and very acceptable frothed milk BUT it is made of plastic and not stainless - which might be a more important disadvantage for some. The ceramic grinder is quieter, producing very noticeably finer espresso-sized grounds at the factory middle setting (experimentation proved this setting to be the best) than the Jura set to the finest grind. Consequently the coffee is much stronger than the single scoop of coffee would suggest (as compared with the Jura's 2 smaller scoops).Within 80 seconds after switching it on, it completes a warm-up procedure which includes passing some 2oz of hot water (I use it to pre-heat my cup) through the two dispensing nozzles and is ready to brew coffee. The relatively small size of the spent coffee-puck bin, dregs tray, 8oz bean hopper, and 57oz water reservoir can be annoying when you are making numerous coffees, but I see the positive here - "The Nasties" do not build up. Rinsing the puck-bin and dregs tray under warm water each time I refill the water container takes much less than one minute - usually only once per day. The steam wand also needs wiping down and flushing with steam after each use to prevent "The Nasties" and I pull off the stainless part and wash it and wipe the internal pipe after each session of multiple frothings.I choese not to use the expensive water filters because my soft tap-water will require few descalings. Weekly rinsing of the easily removed brew-group (the plastic guts of the machine) is easily accomplished without using expensive chemicals. At the same time I soap and rinse the water reservoir, puck bin, and dregs-tray. Lubrication of moving parts of the brew-group (using the food-safe lubricant provided) is suggested after 500 brewing cycles. - Every 2 months should do it for my usage.A ½oz ristretto is too strong for me if more than "1 bean" (7gm of coffee grounds) coffee strength is selected. When making a long coffee (6oz of coffee in an 8oz cup) "1 bean" is fairly strong, "2 beans" is strong, and "3 beans" (10.5gm of coffee grounds) is too strong - and I like strong coffee. The "Saeco Brewing System" is easily adjusted to produce espressos with lots of crema or long coffees with little crema and greatly improved taste. - This is not the sales gimmick I had suspected it to be. Froth is of a fairly good quality - easily matching most store-bought coffees, but a good barrista can always produce far superior frothed milk on a high-powered semi-automatic machine. When I ran out of my regular, every-day coffee (Lavazza Super Crema) I used a local high-quality medium-roast coffee which was quite oily (must have been rather old - tasted below par) but the ceramic grinder handled these with ease. Though I would never use them (their taste is so inferior - to my palate) dark roasts always tend to be oily and are best-avoided in super-automatics - where cleaning the grinder becomes a major issue. Medium and light roasts work best with all super-automatics. The by-pass doser is excellent for decaf. coffee and the single-origin beans I use occasionally, though I have to use my separate burr grinder for them. Even though I am making more coffee drinks per day because it is so quick and easy, I am using less coffee. Wasted/stewed coffee is effectively eliminated. This machine will accommodate mugs of 5½" (6¼" if drip tray is removed). Even my Nissan Travel mugs can be filled directly from the machine using the double brew feature (2 quick presses of the brew button gives 2 complete, consecutive brew cycles) for 2 x 6½oz = 13oz of coffee - again from fairly strong (1 bean/14gm coffee) through too strong (3 beans/21gm coffee).I use several different styles and sizes of cup (for ristrettos, espressos, long coffees, lattes, macchiatos, and cappuccinos) so I PREFER the simple selection process this machine offers to that of the more-programmable and more-expensive Talea Touch model. For me it would be a pain to have to enter programming mode because the available 3 selections does not cover the range of drinks, sizes, and strengths I make. AND I only have to make 2 adjustments each time (size, strength) before pressing the brew button compared to 1 button on the Talea Touch. The one big question I have about this machine (and all other "super-automatics") is long term reliability. They all have plastic "brew-groups" - the working parts which do the tamping, brewing, and ejection of spent coffee pucks, and these may be this type of machine's weakest link - BUT replacement brew-groups are available for $60. I quickly discovered that this was the culprit when the warning light came on when everything was OK (bean hopper and water reservoir full, puck-bin and dregs tray empty). During the weekly maintenance I now vacuum the machine all around the (removed) brew-group supports, and gently waggle the brew-group as I re-insert it to ensure that it is correctly and fully seated. No longer a problem and the weekly maintenance takes less than 5-minutes.My 5 Stars would be less if a stainless body and larger capacities were more important to me. So far I am delighted with both the ease of use and quality of product. Though better coffees may be possible, this barrista (and most others) cannot produce them consistently.I have owned this machine for only a month. In that time I have not used any of my numerous other coffee-makers. It is producing 5 to 15 good quality coffees per day without fuss or waste. Any change and I shall revisit this review.

4Sensitive but Wonderful!
By decorator in Pa.
I have had my saeco talea Giro for about two years now. It had to be serviced once during this time. The machine is a bit touchy and you really have to get to know how it works before you can judge it. First of all you have to keep it cleaned and de-scaled to keep it in good working order. If you have no time for this then do not buy it. Lights will come on before you start to brew to let you know you have to clean out the coffee grounds or empty the water well. This can be annoying if you are ready to have an espresso and you have to stop and clean things out. It will not work unless this is done first. So what I do after I brew is take the time and clean and empty grounds so the next time it is ready to go. With that said, I absolutely love making my latte it is of the highest quality that you would find at Starbucks or any other great coffee house. I even take it with me on vacation, if I can. I think for the money though, it should be made of stainless steel and not plastic on the outside. Also the drip tray should be make more sturdy to hold a large cup and not break off like mine did. If you have any problems with this machine after warranty you have to ship it off to a dealer that fixes these machines. That can me troublesome and you have to do without your espresso machine for weeks. I did give this a high rating because of the excellent quality of espresso and lattes. In the end that is why I bought the machine.

4A princess but worth it.
By Cyanwood
I've had this machine almost a year and have used it at least once a day with no problems. It's my first expresso machine so it's really my testing machine. It makes great expresso and it's very quick and easy but as previous reviewer said, it's a bit touchy and I found the initial learning curve annoying.Pros: I can make multiple cups easily. It has the ability to select shot size, strength of expresso and the amount of water dispensed with the shot.It has a pre-ground coffee bypass feature which I love for late night decaf and trying different brands for different family members tastes.Because it warms quickly I can have a latte before work in the morning. As semi automatic its convenient, consistent and makes great lattes. No more costly Starbucks!Cons :You have to stay on top of the maintenance and prep.Lights will come on if the grounds aren't emptied and water tank filled. It takes up a good bit of counter space. It's plastic and the drip tray does not support a large coffee cup filled with milk for steaming. I have to prop it with another cup.I gave it 4 stars because, as a semi automatic, it produces wonderfully consistent expresso and lattes, is very easy to use and it's fast. As a starter machine it's great and when I move on up I'll know what I want in my next machine.

2Not good if you want to use it daily
By Shawn Smith
I bought the large one and don't know anyone with a burner small enough that the front does not get heated and create stain on the stainless. Also the lid has cracked in many places, even though i am very careful with heat. I paid a ridiculous amount of money for this because of the nice design, but design has to be functional too - to stand the test of time. Coffee tastes fine so I have to live with this self destructing coffee maker to try to get some kind of value over time.

Hamilton Beach Espresso Maker. You can't visit your favorite European cafe every weekend. But when the aroma of this espresso maker's rich, cafe-quality espresso reaches your nose, you just might be able to pretend. It makes excellent cappuccino, too.

4Good crema, nice cup size
By John S. Socha
This machine, with the proper grind of espresso (in other words not Folger's drip or something!) produces as good a cup as I have ever used. And I've had some fairly impressive Italian units. I especially like that the clearance from the portafilter to the base is longer and allows the use of a slightly taller cup for those times when I let it run longer for more of a cafe Americano. The pump inside is Italian, so that may be the reason for the better than average performance in this price range. Again, this is NOT a drip maker, and is NOT designed to make an 8 ounce cup of black coffee...it makes espresso!

1Excellent!
By Ian Matthew Waits
Like the the person mentioned above my unit came from Walmart at a great price! It was gift from my girl friend. Excellent machine for the price. It replaced a Krups XP4025 which only lasted 2 years and cost $150 from Amazon of all places. That machine was o.k. but this machine produces a better shot with better crema. I've not experience the aforementioned leak but I will keep an eye out for that.It should be noted that I generally only make cold drinks and use E.S.E Pods for the ease of use so I can't attest how well it steams milk or how well it froths milk.*****UPDATE 27 August 2010*****Still a decent machine but it's really picky about ESE Pods and the brew gasket is fragile and has had to be replaced. Hamilton Beach customer service is surprisingly prompt.Looses one star for durability.*****UPDATE 5 Sept 2010*****Don't waste your money. The head group gasket blew after six weeks of use and its non-repairable. Thankfully it was gift or I would've really lost it.

3Finally Figured It Out!
By L. Holmes Jr.
I received this as a Christmas gift from my wife and kids. I will be the first to admit that I love a good cup of coffee and a good cappuccino, but as for the technical aspects of the art of being a barista, I am a complete novice. I knew nothing about expresso's or crema. I spent the next few days on Youtube looking at espressos being made and reading up on the subject. Afterwards, I figured I was ready to give it a try. My first attempt was embarrassing. It made a great cup of coffee but I couldn't pull an espresso for anything. I finally realized that I couldn't use my regular ground Maxwell House. I had some whole beans that were given to me so I ground them up into a very, very fine powder, like powdered sugar. Voila! I pulled 2 espressos with beautiful crema. I then steamed some milk and had one of the best cappuccinos I have ever had. This baby steams like all get out. There is a trick to pullling espressos though. The light will come on indicating that the water is hot enough, but it isn't. What I do is turn on the indicator for the steam wand. When the water is hot enough for that, I steam the milk first. Then I switch the mode to cup and wait about 30 seconds. Once I hit brew, a beautiful shot of espresso comes out with a nice head of crema. This machine is pretty good if you follow the instructions. The coffee needs to be ground to a very fine powder in order to work. One might want to get a better tamper and it would have been nice if they included a milk steaming container. For the beginner, this is a good machine to learn on. The key is that the water MUST be hot enough to build up enough pressure, don't rely on the light.
