1Don't bother with this machine
By Windchime
We have had this machine for approximately 2 years. However, we are away for approximately 6 mos of the year and only use this machine on occasion, so it has not had much use. It now will not pump water through to make the espresso. The steamer works well, but the frother does not, ie no hot water pumped through the nozzle either. It only malfunctioned intermittently at first, but soon I was not able to make a cup of espresso. I could hear the pump running, but it was muted and there was plenty of water in the reservoir. I also have cleaned regularly with white vinegar and only use distilled water. After some research, I discovered many other people were having the same problem with one reviewer saying he had to take the machine apart, not an easy feat, and fiddled with a valve and it began working correctly again. This is considered a "throw-away" machine, so service is not existent if you can't do it yourself. My husband is in the process of tinkering to see if he can find the problem, as it is not obvious, even though he has the machine apart. I can afford another machine, but I do not consider a $70 + item to be a throw-away after only a couple of years of light use. I am looking for another brand machine, or may even resort to my old stove top maker as it has no moving or electrical parts.

I had a HB espresso maker that lasted 2yrs and I loved it with no problems, prior HB that lasted not quite a yr under warranty an HB replaced it. I bought 2 others recently due to my HB wouldnt make Espresso anymore but the steam steam/frother still worked. Looked for a new one right away. I bought 2 espresso makers had problems right away and returned them both, went online to find another HB, for the price and quality, found another one almost the same but a newer version. I would definitely recommend, it works great. The espresso is wonderful and it steams and froths the milk wonderful and hot!!!! I found alot of reasonable priced espresso makers doesnt froth or steam the milk very well or get very hot at all. Make sure you follow the instructions prior to use, and it takes a little to get that perfect mocha, but after 3 yrs, I like mine better and its cheaper. An awesome buy for the quality.

3Not a bargain
By Random Reader
I bought this machine about six months ago on the basis of excellent reviews on other sites and my own positive experience with Gaggia products in the past. Unfortunately, I have been disappointed with the Unica. My previous super-automatic was a Saeco purchased from Starbucks. It was quite good, but after 8 years of daily use, finally succumbed. The Unica seemed appealing as a smaller and less pricey replacement. In fact, it is not smaller at all, taking up loads of counter space. Yet despite identical footprint, it has a much smaller coffee hopper and water reservoir, both of which need to be refilled after just a few drinks. By contrast, my old Saeco could go about a week between refills. What's more irritating is that the Unica turns on the low water indicator light when it is still one-third full. That's enough water to make at least three espresso shots--but no, you have to add water. In addition to being small, the hopper is covered with a plastic grille not designed to be removed in daily use. Coffee is supposed to fall through it to the grinder, but in practice it makes the hopper difficult and messy to fill while serving no discernible purpose whatsoever. The espresso it brews is quite good, but the steamer wand is virtually useless; it's next to impossible to both heat the milk and build foam. Depending on technique, you get either foamy cold milk or foamless hot milk. After 8 years using a similar machine, I'd gotten pretty good at frothing, but now I bypass the wand entirely and use another method. So much for "automatic."As you might expect from a cut-rate machine, the build is flimsy. I have to be even more careful than I usually am--and all I really do is make espresso. My suggestion is to shop around for a better option, even at a higher price.

5My 6th Super-Automatic and the Best so Far!
By CBG1977
I have been using super-automatic espresso machines since 2001. This is my 6th machine and by far my favorite. Having owned one Capresso C1500, three Jura-Capressos, one Saeco and now the Gaggia Academia, I've found this machine to outperform the rest by far. I loved the quality of the Capresso and Jura-Capresso machines, but having to send them in once a year for service at a cost of over $300 was excessive. There is no way to service the inside of these machines. Plus, I could never get the milk hot enough with the built-in frothing system on the S9 One-Touch or the Z5 and these machines lacked an external frothing wand so it was impossible to heat the milk any hotter than it came out of the machine. Next I purchased Saeco Primea Touch Plus and that was a complete mistake. The milk system is internal and constantly clogged and refused to function. This machine was returned shortly after purchase. I began looking for a machine that was as well-constructed as the Jura-Capresso, but had the ease of maintenance like the Saeco. I learned that Philips had recently purchased the Saeco/Gaggia company, so I decided to take a chance on a Gaggia machine after seeing a demo in-store.What I Like:- The machine is fully adjustable by coffee strength, milk amount, water amount, etc. You can even adjust these settings on the fly via the color screen.- The machine is bomb-proof. Another reviewer noted that there is still a lot of plastic and yes this is true (although much less so than in Jura machines), but the machine is all metal where it counts. In the in-store demo, the demonstrator lifted the machine by its hinges to show how well it is constructed. This machine will undoubtedly hold up to years of use.- The machine has a "sealed" bean container that keeps the beans fresher that other brands of super-automatics that lack this feature.- The automatic frothing container could not be any easier to use. You snap it in a press a button. It automatically cleans itself after use and any leftover milk can be left in the container and refrigerated for next use eliminating waste.- Machine rinses itself before and after every use, so there is no "old" coffee taste when you brew your next cup.- The quality of coffee is amazing! This machine produces coffee very close the the Pasquini semi-automatic at my office. The quality is much better than my Jura machines.- The Mavea water filter removes the chlorine taste from tap water and lessens the amount of maintenance you must perform on the machine.- The adjustable coffee "spout". One of my biggest complaints with the Jura machines is that you aren't able to fit a proper sized cup under the automatic spout. You're limited to cups about 4" in height. Because of the nearly infinite adjustments available on this machine, my 16 oz to-go mug fits no problem.- The built-in frothing wand. Most of the milk that comes out of super-automatic machines is not hot enough if the latte or cappuccino is not going to be consumed immediately. This is not a problem with this machine. If the milk is not hot enough simply activate the built in steaming wand and heat it up a few more degrees. This is one of the few fully automatic machines that has this feature.- The ease of maintenance - my favorite feature by FAR. The brew-group is removable. Simply remove it from the machine and rinse it out. No expensive trips back to the manufacturer for cleaning. What I don't:- The price. This machine is very expensive. If you have couple-of-times-a-day trip to S'bux like I did, then the machine will pay for itself in about a year. However, it still in the same ball park as a lot of nice used cars.- The pickiness with coffee beans. With super-automatics you can not use beans that are oily AT ALL. This limits my bean choice and I am unable to use the beans of some of my favorite artisan coffee roasters.- The frequency of emptying the internal and external drip trays as well as spent coffee pucks. The machine has two trays and an internal coffee grounds drawer and they have to be emptied at least every other day or about after every five coffees. The Jura-Capressos had very large drip trays and dump bins that only had to be emptied about once a week. This can be annoying if you're in a hurry in the morning and the machine flashes this message before you can brew a coffee.- The small water tank. This tank is very well designed, but it must be refilled after about 6 coffees. My Jura machines would brew about 20.My complaints are very few and after using this machine for over 6 months, I couldn't be happier. Even with the high price, I believe I got exactly what I paid for - a well-built machine that easily brews quality coffee and coffee drinks with ease of use and little maintenance. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone l who loves coffee, but doesn't want to grind, tamp, brew espresso, and froth milk manually. Within 30 seconds, you can have a coffee drink that rivals that of all but the best baristas.

5Well designed, sturdy machine that lives up to the promises
By Matt D
I just purchased this machine from Amazon and have been incredibly impressed with the build quality, features, and quality of the coffee produced. You can't beat this machine in terms of the product design, multitudes of modes of operation, and elimination of cleaning chores often associated with fully automatic home machines.Unboxing the product is your first clue to the level of detail the manufacturer paid to the product experience. As is custom with Gaggia products, this machine was designed and built at the Milan factory -- something that will not escape you from the early moments of opening the box. Once the shipping box is opened, you simply remove the outer box to reveal the inside box, which has two convenient long handles to make it easy for you to lift the machine out of the shipping box. Inside, the sealed inner box contains your unit, with prominent serial number markings on the inner box and the "Made in Milan, Italy" (naturally in Italian) stamped proudly. You'll be surprised with the highly durable construction, in particular, the stainless steel finish which seems to be impervious to finger prints in my usage so far -- and the high quality hinges that reveal the inner workings of the machine: the brew group, drip tray, and grounds drawer. One unique feature of this machine is that the brew group is fully removable for easy maintenance and cleaning. Given that o-rings over time will break down and are a common service issue on home machines from other manufacturers, the ability to self maintain in your kitchen without needing to pull the machine out or remove it to another location is a plus. Maintenance kits for the o-rings can be found for as little as $9.99.The manuals are well written and the menu system is intuitive and easy to use. Brew strength can be varied with a simple dial on the front of the machine, and individual settings for each beverage, including coffee quantity, volume, temperature, and milk froth settings, if applicable, can be specified. There's also a coffee chute for pre-ground coffee should you chose to use some for a particular beverage instead of the beans. This gets to the main strength of this machine: it's completely configurable. Many people gravitate to manual machines due to the lack of control over the Espresso pull; this machine not only lets you program it, you can change it easily before every cup without needing to descend into tons of on-screen menus. The milk carafe is a fabulous feature -- and it's zero mess. You simply pop it in, move the arm over the cup, and select the beverage you want. When you're done making milk beverages, you return the arm to the middle position which activates a steam rinse feature that flushes the milk circuit with steam for cleanliness. Simply remove the carafe to the fridge for safe keeping until your next cleaning!Another feature of the adjustable brew center is that it can be removed for exceptionally tall cups. Nice for those tall cups in the morning on the way to work!Since energy consumption is on everybody's mind these days, the unit features a double boiler (one for the brew group, and one for the milk circuit.) There's an optional ECO mode which will automatically power down the milk circuit when not in use -- simply call-up the machine's settings to activate the feature. Furthermore, the unit features an adjustable auto-standby feature which will put the unit into standby mode drawing less than a watt of power.I couldn't be happier with my unit. The coffee taste, strength, and temperature are perfect. The adjustments are virtually unlimited and you can achieve precisely the results you want consistently. A great appliance for any coffee lover's kitchen!

5Excellent and yummy!!!
By theDuke
First of all, I must say I was VERY skeptical about paying this high of an amount of money for a machine. Secondly, I spent a week reading reviews and going back and forth between this Academia and the Delonghi Gran Dama ESAM6600. I won't go into details of the Delonghi, but I will say that a friend of mine has it and I spent nearly 2 weeks drinking coffee with her here and there and I have to say that I am glad I bought the Gaggia, it makes a way better cup of coffee and has a WAY better milk frothing system than the Delonghi. I can't comment on the maintenance comparissons since I dont own the Delonghi...The Gaggia AcademiaThe Pros;Very simple and straightforward to use. Comes pre-programmed (to MEDIUM everything) so all you do is hit a button. You can easily change each coffee type settings in the nice lcd screen and adjust temperature, density, water amount, etc..Milk container for frothing is super convenient, easy to use and stays sealed in the fridge to prevent spoiling. It also is far beyond the Gran Adamas, my friend actually doesnt use the Delonghi container because it sucks :)I have used starbucks and whole foods premium organic beans and I have no problems with either. My favorite so far is Starbucks Italian Dark Roast. The coffee this beauty makes is amazing, the cappuccinos are very good and the brewing process is not too loud.Machine turns on, rinses, primes and warms up FASTER than the Gran Adama and even my other friends Miele Built in cabinet(+$5000 machine) unit.Very flexible brewing options, once you understand what it does, it becomes your new best friend for coffee lovers like me!Maintenance elements are VERY basic. You have to empty the drip tray, grounds bin, prebrew tray and ocassionally shake off the brew-group (plastic mechanism inside)Machine is very well built, on the heavy side, sexy stainless and looks like the money it's worthThe Cons; There isn't many cons but here a few VERY minor things I personally would like different:Coffee cup size = I am an IT guy and I have learned to drink coffee in GIGANTIC cups. This machine does have a "LONG COFFEE" button, but it will make an almost full regular cup of coffee (less than the 11oz size) and the regular coffee setting makes about half that. So if you plan on making TONS of LARGE coffee mugs, this machine is probably not going to work for you.Temperature = I did see some people complain about this. First, the machine is shipped with all the temps set to medium, so you have to set it to high. If you're like my dad and you like scalding hot coffee, this machine can do it fine for as long as you dont add creamer or make capuccinos. I personally like warm/hot coffee and sometimes i will feel that it is not as hot as I would like it to be after adding a generous amount of cold creamer. The cappuccinos come out just fine but cool quickly so dont expect it to be super hot after a little while.Maintenance = Eventhough it is very simple to maintain the machine, the fluids containers are somewhat small. I make about 10 coffees per day and I have to empty the thing on a daily basis. It doesn't bother me personally, but I do consider it a con for those who lack the will to do this frequently because the machine will stop you from making coffee if it gets full so I can see some impatient people get cranky.Bypass Chute = This is where you would put already ground coffee in example like when you need to brew a cup of decaf for someone and dont want to empty your beans. The bypass is VERY sensitive to the AMOUNT of ground coffee you dump in there. If you get it wrong, it will simply dump out the grounds into the bin and not brew anything and tell you something about pressure problems... Depending on the grind density, i suggest LESS than the scoop provided with the machine==========================Overall, this thing is worth every penny. Make sure to not use tap water, set all the drink temps to HIGH/MAX and play around with each coffee button until you dial in the right amount of water, coffee and temperature. For espresso, I truly recommend Starbucks Dark Espresso Roast. For espresso and frequent regular coffee (my choice) I recommend Starbucks Dark Italian Roast. Don't be afraid, buy this over the Delonghi, I promise it is better. You will enjoy every cup and since only coffee nuts like me will pay nearly $3000 grand for a coffee maker, I bet you will run to the machine every moring when you wake up, just for another great cup of coffee... Also, if you hate manuals like me, I suggest you go on youtube and find videos, it was the best 10 minute crash course I took and it enabled me to handle the machine from the first time. Do keep the manual since it will occassionally display icons you won't understand and you can reference them in the manual. For me, almost 1 month so far and over 100 brews made (machine has a built in counter) and i am truly happy...

5Stylish and easy to use machine that makes great coffee
By David J. Carpenter
I really like this product. Using the new capsules makes for no mess at all.The machine is ready in minutes and if you want a quick espresso its so so simple.I tend to pull a couple of shots before switching to the steam function for foaming the milk.It gets up to temperature pretty quickly. I find it takes a good 2 mins to get the milk up to the right temp.It makes good foam and I can make better drinks at home than places like starbucks. It doesn't beat the coffee shops I frequent but then it wont. A decent coffee house that uses $14,000 machines, good grinders, excellent beans and knowledgeable barristas will win everytime. But for that quick fix at home its great. Its a small unit and it looks great on my kitchen counter. People comment on how it looks all the time. It looks more expensive than it is.My first recommendation is that if you want to switch back to pulling a shot after steaming milk do not just press the cup button else it will take a while to cool down to the temp needed to pull a shot.Instead press the cup button and immediately press the steamer button. This will expell hot steam through the wand and cool down faster. I dont think this is noted in the booklet but its a great feature.Another recommendation is that you clean the wand right after steaming the milk. Its best to keep that as clean as possible and is easier to clean right after its been used than later on when its all sticky and clogged. All in all a great machine for the money. Totally recommended and believe me I am a coffee snob and will only drink great coffee.

Jura-Capresso 13187 Impressa E8 Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Black

Product Description

Combining dramatic aesthetics with advanced technology, this fully automatic coffee center brews superb espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, and long crema coffees. The machine features an 18-bar power pump with a 1450-watt stainless-steel lined ThermoBlock heating system. The unit's integrated, professional, solid-steel conical burr grinder offers consistent and aroma-saving grinding with six fineness settings for any type of bean--from light to dark roasts.

In addition, its separate funnel for pre-ground coffee allows for making decaf or flavored coffee drinks--great for entertaining. A two-step pre-infusion cycle moistens and conditions ground coffee for maximum flavor extraction with perfect crema topping. The unit's fast, easy-to-use Dual Frother Plus provides continuous steam output and offers two settings, one for latte (steaming milk) and one for cappuccino (steaming and frothing milk).

For added convenience, the espresso machine’s programming functions are easy to use. Simply touch the 1-cup button once, twice, or three times for mild, regular, or strong coffee, and turn the rotary dial to select the cup size from 1 to 8 ounces. The 2-cup button always produces twice as much coffee. So, if the cup size is set to 7 ounces it will brew a total of 14 ounces. The unit's frother can be used to release hot water for Cafe Americano or a cup of tea, and its hot water function is programmable from 1 to 16 ounces. An eight-digit LED display dialog system gives short, simple instructions like "ready", "heating", "steam ready", "fill water", and "clean unit". Selecting from "continuous-on" or "auto-off" from one half-hour to nine hours in one-hour increments ensures the machine stays on as long as needed.

Other useful features include a 64-ounce removable water tank, an 8-ounce bean container, a height-adjustable coffee spout, a five-level water hardness selector, and an automatic hot-water rinse cycle that cleans and pre-heats all vital brewing parts. Moreover, its Clearyl water-care system removes chlorine, lead, aluminum, and copper for better tasting coffee, and an electronic water-level sensor makes sure the machine never operates without water. Accessories include a measuring scoop, Clearyl filter, water hardness indicator strip, cleaning tablets, and a video with detailed tips on brewing, frothing methods, and cleaning. Designed in classic black matte with a silver metallic middle section, the espresso machine makes for a beautiful addition to any home or small office. The unit measures 11 by 13-3/5 by 17 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

5Love It!
By John Miller
I have to say, I *love* my E8! I tried one at a store and, after a lot of research, settled on Jura Capresso because of the cleaning cycle feature (most others you have to remove the "brew group" once a week or so and manually clean it - I was *so* not going to do that!). I settled on the E8 versus other JC's because of the price and the features... the higher-end models' extra features (none of which directly affect the quality of a single cup) were worth the additional cost, especially since I live alone.I've no complaint about the temperature of the coffee, as long as I pre-heat my cup. A little hot water out of the spiget does the trick. I use a decent coffee bean from a local store and have excellent results. I did have to play around with the grind settings, but I expected that. The frother (I don't have the fancy add-on) does a better-than-decent job of frothing/foaming milk; however, it's not as good as a coffee-house machine wielded by a pro, with perfect-temperature milk and a cold pitcher. However, it works much better than any home-based espresso machine I've encountered, and much better than what one often gets from a disaffected coffee counter person. The flavor is rich and full - like cafe crema or espresso ought to be. While, again, a true barista with a true pro machine and the best beans can indeed produce a better cup, this is far better than what I typically get in a high-end coffee shop. That's part of what originally sold me on it - I found out the store that I sampled it at used "cheap supermarket beans" (as they put it).One does have to be careful with the beans; if they're oily, they'll cling to each other and not make their way down the hopper. The solution? Stick your finger in the beans and swirl once, or don't use oily beans (oily doesn't necessarily mean more flavor). I like the beans I use but they do stick slightly, and a little touch with my finger fixes the 'problem'. The manual, video, web site, and talking chicken that came with the product makes this very clear.Cleaning is a breeze - every couple of days I empty the hopper that catches the pucks (grounds). Once a week or so I rinse out the drip tray. Every once in a while it alerts me that I need to run a cleaning cycle: in goes the tablet and that's it.My only complaint - and I knew this going in - is that for $1000 it ought not be 100% plastic. The spigot that the coffee comes out is plastic, and raises/lowers. I'm always careful, because if something that I have control over is going to break, it's going to be this piece. More expensive models have metal for this piece, but I couldn't see adding $500+ dollars for this.I was originally concerned not having a cup warmer might be an issue. It says it has a passive cup warmer in some of the online literature, but that's baloney - the top doesn't get any warmer than rooom temperature. However, it is no inconvenience (and I'm pretty lazy) to release some water from the spigot into the cup, and let it sit for a few seconds. This is just about the best thing ever! I used to go to coffee shops and drop $7 - $10 a day. I figure I'll make that back after costs in about a year. It's not expensive - it's economical in my book!

5I love Miss Anna
By Paula Burgoon
OK, this thing ain't cheap. I mean, how can you ever justify spending $1000 on a coffee maker?? I named mine Miss AnniBirthenTine. She was so expensive, that she was my 'Anni'versary, 'Birth'day, and Val'enTine's day gift all rolled into one item! That being said, I admit I have a bit of an unhealthy relationship with my coffee maker. I love her. Fine. I said it.One thing I have noticed is that Miss Anna is smarter than I am. She tells me when to clean her, fill her with water, etc. And, I love that. She's clean and polite - never demanding. Here and there she does some things I am not sure of, but nothing has been serious. For instance, I also experienced what the reviewer who gave one star said - intermittent coffee - part way through she would just turn off. I did not call customer service, but instead did some troubleshooting on my own. I came to the conclusion that the beans I bought were a bit oily (which is warned against in all the manuals and videos) and were jamming the works. I ran it through a clean cycle with a tablet and she has been a happy coffee maker since.Miss Anna has been a part of our family since early Jan 2005. I drink Capuccinos every morning and use the hot water a lot during the winter for tea and soup. When I am feeling rather saucy, I even make espresso with half and half. YUM. You would have to rip this thing out of my cold, dead arms to get it away from me. I love Miss Anna. When I am away on vacation, I am sad about the mediocre swill people call coffee that I have to settle for until I return home. As long as I don't think about the money, I love this thing more than I can describe.

4coffee convenience
By Teranika
I bought this machine about two years ago. At the time I thought it was pricey, but decided that in the long run, it would pay off. It has.PROS:CONVENIENCE. There is nothing like coming down in the morning, pressing a button, and having a good coffee, which is freshly ground for you while you wait. The separate boilers allows you to immediately switch from foaming milk to producing espresso.EASE. My partner and parents (who wouldn't touch my Gaggia classic because it was too complicated) all use this machine without hesitation.DURABILITY. After two years, our well-used machine (2-3000 cups) has not needed a repair.VERSATILITY. The coffee bypass is extremely convenient, given that my partner and I frequently prefer different roasts - it is very simple for one of us to grind our own and use the bypass to produce our preferred cup.ECONOMY. The initial price tag for this machine is high. But when you compare it with the cost of buying 1-2 cappuccinos per day from your local barista...you can quickly see that the machine pays for itself.CONS:COFFEE QUALITY: Very very good, but I suspect that the pressures are just not quite high enough to make the coffee of nirvana. Still very good.FOAM QUALITY: We've never been able to produce the perfect foam from this machine, but again the quality is high enough, and the convenience makes it worth it.REGULAR MAINTENANCE: The machine does require regular (about every 5 wks) cleaning and descaling, using tablets purchased from the manufacturer. It's a slight inconvenience, but the procedures are easy to follow and take about an hour each.*****UPDATE THREE YEARS AFTER PURCHASE: After three years of use, our Jura has started giving us an "Error 8" message and its first major repair, which is to replace a large chunk of the brew group. The repair guy claims that this is a common error for this machine, and is expected to cost us ~$150. We also estimate that we pay about $100/year for cleaning tablets. I still really love this coffee machine (we use is several times every day) but thought that these additional maintenance costs would be useful to see in a review.
