4excellent product, if you can prime the pump ("error E05")
By Michael J. Markowitz
Had a lot of frustration setting it up, but now that it's working I'm beginning to fear coffee addiction. Like many others, I got the dreaded E05 priming error upon initialization; must have tried restarting the thing 20 times. Finally called Saeco support and was told that this is a common error ("possibly caused by sensor movement during shipping") and that I should return the product to Amazon. Yeah, right. So I googled for help and found the trick to entering the Service Menu: immediately after you switch it on press the LR, UL, UR, LL buttons in that sequence. Then you find the pump test and run it manually. Voila! Got the expected water heating message upon the next restart. Even installed and primed the filter. An espresso and two great cups of cappuccino later, I'm a very happy camper.

5Nice Machine - A slight challenge to weaken down the coffee for American tastebuds, but easy to do
By Howard Hinman
Just got this new machines. Had a Saeco Vienna Deluxe for 8 years that seems to be getting weak (had the boiler replaced twice during the 8 years, but otherwise a great machine at $600). Easy to unpack and get set up following the quick start guide. Had an issue with the water filter. The quick start does not even mention it. Finally found the installation instructions in the water filter box itself. The machine would not prime when we inserted the water filter as we were setting it up. We followed instructions and submerged it and squeezed it to get the water out but it quickly put up an error panel each time we tried to turn it on and get to prime. Thought we had a bad machine for a bit, but removed the filter completely and put water in it and it primed right up the first time. Ran some water through the steamer wand and then reinserted the filter and powered it off and on, and it primed fine and is using the filter now without issue. One nice surprise is that the machine is 16 inches tall. The specs I read online somewhere indicated it was 20 inches tall which would have meant it would not fit under any of our kitchen cabinets. We were pleasantly surprised that it was only about an inch taller than the Vienna Deluxe machine and fits easily under our cabinets. It's a beautiful looking machine as well - a nice addition to our kitchen.Tried all the different coffees - with 2% milk it really froths and creams up milk incredibly - quite a nice surprise. Cappuccino's and lattes are superb. The carafe is a great design - you can pop it off easily and put it in the fridge when not needed.Only complaints so far are that it has a surprisingly small water reservoir (appears to be even smaller than the one on the Vienna Deluxe) and it makes overly strong coffees for our taste (my wife is European and she was complaint the old machine was too weak but the new machine is too strong). You also have to move it out sideways from under the cabinet in order to open the lid and lift the water reservoir all the way up and out of the machine. On our Vienna Deluxe, the reservoir detached easily from the top and could be filled and replaced without having to move the machine out from under the cabinet. The Xelsis does have a pour spout hole so you don't have to remove the reservoir to fill it, but you still have to move the machine out from under the cabinet to fully open the top lid to pour water into it. Regarding the high default coffee strength, even the American coffee grinds 2 loads to make a single cup and we've been unable (quickly) to figure out how to lessen the strength. The "SBS" knob on the front which is supposed to control strength does not seem to have much (any?) effect on what comes out. The American Coffee setting appears to be hard programmed in and not adjustable (think I even read that somewhere). So now I am into the manual to see how to adjust settings for individual users and see if we can weaken what comes out down a bit. I'll post more on the progress later. About to try to figure out how to use the fingerprint reader - no mention of such in the quick start either.Awesome machine - hopefully we'll figure out how to customize the strength to our tastes.Update 1: We have fully figured out how to use the fingerprint ID and User Settings and weaken the coffee to our tastes. American Coffee settings are etched in Stone as far as strength - it appears it will always ground and squeeze two sets of beans for each individual cup which is very strong. However, we were able to customize the "Espresso Lungo" (Tall Espresso) settings to make a weaker and taller cup of coffee and it is much more to our taste now. In fact, we actually strengthened it up a bit using the SBS knob on the front. You can also add more coffee to the grind if you want it even a bit stronger. I set the "length" higher (which is the amount of water or cup size effectively) just below the max setting, increased the heat setting (I add cream later), and changed the grind amount (effectively the strength from the amount of beans taken in) from the two beans to the one bean icon). My wife just tried fat free milk in the carafe and made an extremely frothy and smooth Latte Macchiato. I'm stunned that fat free milk froths up this well. A good technique with this and cappuccinos if you want them sweetened is to use a wide based cup and spread the sugar or sweetener across the bottom so when the hot milk hits it, it blends in somewhat as the cup is being filled and you get a sweetened froth.By the way, don't under estimate the usefulness of being able to have custom settings for all coffee types for up to 6 users. We have three coffee drinkers in our home and each is already tweaking things like strength, amount (length), and heat given the amounts of creamers, black coffee drinking, small cups and taller cups they like to make. The fingerprint reader is cute, but it's just as quick to hit the "User Menu" button and down arrow to your user name (and yes - you can type in up to a 6 character name for each user if you don't want to use the provided symbols).** 6 Month Update ** - Enjoying the machine. Only issue we've had is we overfilled the separate decaffeinated ground coffee intake once and it clogged up the outlet where the coffee comes out and it stopped working. Had to figure out what was going on and blow out the tube to get it working again. We are very happy with the unit and have been making anywhere from about 6 - 15 cups of coffee per day. Great machine!

4Great espresso machine
By Richard D. Bradford
If you're reading this, then I'm betting you're serious about getting something in this price range. Yes, it does what it says it does. Yes, the other reviews are correct about everything. But here is what makes this special.I no longer have make coffee myself. I just push a button. nice.BUT, it seems like almost every super-auto doesn't heat up the milk enough. My Xelsis get the milk to about 105F. I like it at 150-160F. So, easy enough to fix but takes another 30 secs. I have to push the 'special' (yeah, that's what it's called)button to get the option for MORE hot milk (not hotter just more) as the drink options don't allow for enough milk vs. coffee (for my preference) and then once again for steam. But the steaming wand is ready within a second and the process of getting my mildly warm latte from 105 to 150 is about 25 seconds, which is outstanding! So, I do recommend this Super-A to anyone that wants a machine to remember their preferences for many people (6)and have the option to change it easily. You will have to tweak your settings a lot before you get it just right. So many variables but the menu system is so easy to use you really don't have to worry. I'm drinking my Xelsis latte right now in fact!
