A Terrific Machine!

This is my second Gaggia and it is a terrific coffee machine. My first one worked perfectly, but I decided to get a second more deluxe model when it was on sale. The coffee/espresso made is superb and it is not as big as some of the earlier ones. I do not use the frother, so I cannot attest to the quality of that part of the machine. We have now been using this Gaggia Platinum for over two years and have never had a problem with it - and it does get a lot of use daily. With these machines, it is imperative to clean them as required, clean out used grinds, and rinse the water container. If anything, I would like that water container to be bigger but, at least this way, you have fresh water pretty much with each use. I would never be without my Gaggia (and my Lavazza coffee beans) for that superb cup of coffee.

An excellent machine

I have owned this machine for three years and have never regretted it. Ok, I regretted it a little when I had to get it repaired once, but it is a straightforward and simple machine, with a double boiler so you don't have to switch temperatures between making espresso and steaming milk.

Great HX Machine with large boiler and consistent shots

I've owned this machine for over a year now and it has been a workhorse. There are days that I pull 3 triple shots (using a triple basket and bottomless portafilter) a day just for me. Then there are days where I have company over and can quickly make lattes, mochas, and americanos for my guests in very little time. I use this with a Nuova Simonelli MDX grinder (flat burr). I've owned cheap machines in the past with single boilers and pressurized portafilter baskets, but this thing blows them away. If you are looking for an e61 HX machine on a budget, look no further.My routine is this:pull 4-5 ounces of water as a flush, but also to heat my two 2.5 ounce shot glasses.dry the portafilter (i use a triple basket)grind 18-21 grams of coffee into portafilter, distribute (north, south, east, west), tamp ~ 30 lbsinsert portafilter and pull 2.5-3 oz shot, stopping the pull when "blonding" starts, around 35 - 40 seconds (22-30 for a double shot).I would recommend getting a different steam tip. I found both a 3-hole and a 4-hole tip from another site, Chris's Coffee. The 3-hole is a nice improvement where I can go from about 60-seconds to steam ~ 8 oz of milk, down to about 35 seconds. The 4-hole tip is even quicker, though it takes much more practice to get latte art quality microfoam. Using the 4-hole tip, I can steam 8 oz of milk in around 20 seconds and the steam power is amazing. The problem with the original single-hole tip, is that it restricts the steam too much in my opinion. It makes it easy to make great foam, but it takes too long.Overall, this is a great machine. It is built like a tank and the programmable buttons are a nice feature. I really like the auto backflush clean cycle that it has. Eventually, I'll probably have to send it to a shop to get descaled, but that is the case with an HX machine, from what I've read. Anytime you are repeatedly heating water, it's going to require a descale at some point. I have a whole-home water softener and RO water at the tap, but I still use the included filter / softener in the water tank to cut down on the scale.

It will give years of use(5-6), but then it is repair or buy new

I have owned this machine for 8 years and for 6 it was working. Overall this is a good machine. It is not a easy machine to repair with its enclosed design. It is very good for what it was designed for: fitting a small area and keeping the cups warm for use. Its greatest feature for our family and office use has been ease of use and the 'quad' espressos. The largest issues are fluctuations in heat at the group head resulting in variations in quality of the brew. (The 'heat' eventually will fry the nice push button controls.) Getting repairs are expensive and hard to get in some areas.Learn as much as you can about the machine and how it operates and clean and flush it regularly (the manual and paperwork it comes with is worthless). Replace the cheap plastic water container (the least they could have done was include a stainless container over the plastic) with a direct plumbing line and filter will save a lot of grief. The container will run out of water more often than you think, so check and fill often. The grind is very important in this machine, too fine and you'll have a long day of cleaning it for their is a second area behind 'the group' that will retain the powdered nectar and clog a secondary screen. If unaware, you will be buying new pumps and relays and such.The baseline question to ask is the convenience and ease of use for this time (5-6 years) worth 1200 dollars to you? If it is, Is the 700 dollar repair also worth continuing down the road with the unit (you will grow to either love or hate) at that 6 year mark? If this is your office machine, it probably is, but if it is for home use, you may want to consider the above.

ESPRESSO FANATIC FINDS PERFECT MACHINE

Tried the inexpensive pump espresso machines from Europe. They make a fair espresso, but take up a lot of space.Then I saw LUNA by Espressione at amazon.com. This machine is powerful, sleek in design, makes a superb espresso, plenty of dry steam for milk based espresso drinks PLUS it doesn't take up a lot of counter space...it takes up NO COUNTER SPACE. I've got in mounted in my breakfast room next to my wetbar. LUNA is beyond words. For the guy or girl who has everything...this is a perfect gift.

Tried pods from Italy...they were ok. Purchased Espressione pods from amazon and they are great. Rich, potent and incredible flavor.

All in all, THRILLED with the LUNA.

Object of Art also makes a killer espresso

I have a high-tech office in Manhattan. All chrome furniture with stainless steel and glass accents.

A friend of mine was in Europe and saw the LUNA wall mount espresso machine in Germany. He was intrigued and thought it would be a great gift for putting up in my office.

When he returned to the states, he logged on to AMAZON and found it as a new item. After he purchased this as a gift for me, we installed it in my office. It took less than ten minutes to decide where I wanted to put the machine, pull out the template, drill the holes, screw the stainless steel back plate into the wall and hang the machine. It truly looks like an object of art. That would be enough...however...the machine makes an incredible espresso. Hot, rich in taste, great aroma, thick foam on top of the coffee. Then I frothed milk for one of our office team and I was totally impressed. The machine produced large volume of dry steam instantly for an phenominal cappuccino.

I checked into the maker of the machine. It's marketed by Espressione here in North America, but made by CMA an Italian maker of commercial espresso machines. That's the reason for the quality.

Viola...this is truly and object of art that makes a killer espresso coffee. Got for it. You'll get tons of compliments and make your guests very happy.

Can't believe I love it

I saw the Luna in England, and fell in love with it, but I didn't think I would be happy with coffee pods - I'm truly a coffee snob. But I ordered the machine from Espressione here in the states, and installed it at the office. Fantastic! Lots of crema, very little time to warm up, fast and simple. The frothing/steaming arm has tons of power - it takes seconds. As for the coffee, I've tried both the pods available through Espressione and the Italian Illy brand, both are great. The espresso is fresh, and I've found that I'm waiting to make my morning espresso until I can use the Luna at my office - ignoring my home machine ( a very nice Swiss semi-commerical espresso machine). My only complaint is the lack of availability of organic, fair trade & shade grown coffee pods, but I'm trying to locate a European source (they are way ahead of the US in organics). The trade off is the pod - no spilled coffee grounds equals no mess at the office!

Best in price range

Overseas, we had a DeLonghi machine, very similar to this one. Apparently on the 220 voltage, the machines get hotter and have higher bar pressure, which is really the only thing that matters in making espresso. Initially, upon returning to the USA, we got a Krups machine, more expensive than this one, and it was a disaster. It spewed water and coffee all over the place, and made a poor cold cup of coffee-soup. We returned it, and went back to DeLonghi. Thank heavens, we can make a proper cup of coffee again. Although the bar pressure is 15, which I think is less than the overseas model, there are no higher pressure machines in the US for even substantially more money. Ignore bells and whistles, and here you have the best, cleanest machine, which can even brew from fine ground coffee (as an espresso machine is supposed to do, as opposed to others on the market). Oh, and the little round pressing device to compress the coffee in the filter is very convenient.

A really nice espresso machine. I've used both pods and ground coffee, and this machine makes great espresso either way. I've owned several inexpensive machines, and finally decided to 'bite the bullet' and get a nice one, and I REALLY got a nice one. Although the instructions say you have to wait 1/2 hour for the unit to warm up, it usually doesn't take that long. I turn it on, and by the time I'm out of the shower it's ready. It won't really make a latte though - I suggest heat your milk, then froth it just a little. But it makes a really nice foamy cappuchino. I'm glad I got this - and heartily reccommend it to anyone who loves espresso, cappuchino or latte!

I have seen alot of negative reviews regarding this appliance, however; I purchased one about a year ago and absolutely love it! The 2 liter tank is the bomb - no more running out of water for steam. There is nothing worse than running out of water in those tiny tanks on other machines. By the time you correct that issue the espresso has gone cold! I crank out some high volume for all my neighbors on the weekends (several lattes) and have never had a single problem with this machine. This machine is built for high volume. I liked it so much I purchased one for my brother. I am also about to get one for a wedding gift for my neighbor. I wouldn't use anything else...especially a Krups! Had two different Krups machines and both fell apart in less than 6 months!
